Extended Learning Opportunities Act

Alabama

Alabama shall allow for students to earn credit for their outside-the-classroom learning.

Students can earn elective credit for out-of-classroom learning offered by approved providers.*

*Program was to commence with the 2021-2022 school year, but has yet to be implemented.

Which students are eligible?

All students attending K-12 public and public charter schools.

Who can be a program provider?

Approved nonprofits, businesses with established locations in the state, trade associations, U.S. Armed Forces, and other community partner organizations.

Who approves provider applications?

Applications must be approved by the State Board of Education or local board of education or a public charter school.

How does a student obtain credit?

Students submit written requests for elective course credit together with proof of completion of the extended learning opportunity to the designated administrator of the school he/she attends.

What type of credit can be obtained?

Elective credits can be awarded.
